SOUND OUT LEEDS 2024/25: Songs for the Soul
Manchester Camerata
Abi Sampa – vocals
Rushil Ranjan – composer
Songs for the Soul is a brand new composition by Rushil Ranjan, commissioned by Manchester Camerata, that fuses the sound of a Western Classical Orchestra with Carnatic Song. Carnatic music is widely considered to be one of the most ancient forms of music from the Indian subcontinent. With roots that lie in deeply spiritual and Vedic traditions it incorporates mathematical, rhythmic complexity, and raga to beautifully illustrate tales from Hindu mythology.

Rushil Ranjan is a multi-disciplinary artist. His work across contemporary, Sufi, and classical music has earned him a reputation as one of the most distinctive and extraordinary musical voices around today. With his Orchestral Qawwali Project Rushil has played the Albert Hall and toured to great critical claim.

Abi Sampa is a multi-instrumentalist, Qawwal and Veena virtuoso. She has become a focal point within contemporary sufi and fusion music. Her ability to mix different styles and command both western and Indian Classical music has garnered her praise from all corners of the music industry.

Manchester Camerata is the UK’s most relentlessly pioneering orchestra.

Be it opening Glastonbury Festival in front of 40,000 people or working intimately in care homes across Greater Manchester with people living with dementia, Manchester Camerata believes in the transformative and connecting power of music. It constantly challenges and redefines what an orchestra can be.
